Parking and transport

When it comes to parking and transportation for the hike between Østerbø and Vassbygdi, you have a couple of choices. Since the hike is not a loop trail, you'll need to arrange transport by car for one of the ways between Østerbø and Vassbygdi. 

  • The first option is to leave your car at Østerbø. We offer free parking, even if you have already checked out. After completing the hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi, you can take the bus back to Østerbø. Please be aware that some bus options may require advance booking.

  • For a more flexible approach, you can drive your car down to Vassbygdi in the morning, take the bus back to Østerbø, and then your car will be waiting for you at the end of the hike. This way, you won't be tied to a specific bus schedule after finishing the hike.

  • Another option is to take the bus down to Vassbygdi in the morning and then hike back up to Østerbø.

There are two different parking spots in Vassbygdi, but we recommend the one at Vassbygdi servicebygg since this is where the trail concludes. Here, you can also treat yourself to a cup of coffee, a waffle, or an ice cream after finishing the hike (during the peak season).

Road Work in the Vassbygdi Tunnel

The Vassbygdtunnel is being renovated and the tunnel is closed at intervals during the daytime, with passage allowed once per hour between 07:00 and 19:30. This currently applies until and including December 19th, 2025, but the renovation project will continue through the winter and parts of the spring. Bus Options

Østerbø Fjellstove Minibus – for overnight guests only and only prebooking

All guests who have booked a hiking package automatically have a seat on our minibus. The bus departs from Østerbø at 08:30 down to Vassbygdi for those who wish to hike up the valley, and from Vassbygdi at 16:30 for those hiking down the valley (an extra bus at 15:30 if needed). All other overnight guests may book a seat on our minibus.

We also offer transport for our overnight guests between Geiteryggen, Steinbergdalen, Østerbø, and Vassbygdi during the period when route bus 850 is not operating.

Norway's Best Bus 2025
Runs between Flåm and Østerbø Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays in September, and the first two weekends of October.
