Parking and transport

When it comes to parking and transportation for the hike between Østerbø and Vassbygdi, you have a couple of choices. Since the hike is not a loop trail, you'll need to arrange transport by car for one of the ways between Østerbø and Vassbygdi. 

  • The first option is to leave your car at Østerbø. We offer free parking, even if you have already checked out. After completing the hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi, you can take the bus back to Østerbø. Please be aware that some bus options may require advance booking.

  • For a more flexible approach, you can drive your car down to Vassbygdi in the morning, take the bus back to Østerbø, and then your car will be waiting for you at the end of the hike. This way, you won't be tied to a specific bus schedule after finishing the hike.

  • Another option is to take the bus down to Vassbygdi in the morning and then hike back up to Østerbø.

There are two different parking spots in Vassbygdi, but we recommend the one at Vassbygdi servicebygg since this is where the trail concludes. Here, you can also treat yourself to a cup of coffee, a waffle, or an ice cream after finishing the hike (during the peak season).

Bus options Østerbø Fjellstove minibus only for overnight guests;

All our resident guests can book a place on our minibus. We offer transport between Østerbø and Vassbygdi and, in addition, our guests can book transport to/from Geiteryggen and Steinbergdalen when the scheduled bus is not running. We are working on an extra bus service for May/June for anyone who wants to visit the valley before the regular bus runs + for September on the days the regular bus does not run. We will post more information here when this is in place.

Closing of the Vassbygdi tunnel, the tunnel between Aurland and Vassbygdi during spring and summer 2025. Here is information from Statens vegvesen.

Road works, The road is closed, between 18:00 and 06:00 every day from 10.03.2025 to 04.07.2025. Free traffic from Friday at 06:00 - Sunday at 18:00 every second week, starting from week 12, 14, 16 etc.. The road will be closed from 18:00 to 06:00 but with drive true from the Aurland side at 19:00, 20:00, 21:45, and 23:00. The convoy will return from the Vassbygd side immediately.
