Parking and transport

When it comes to parking and transportation for the hike between Østerbø and Vassbygdi, you have a couple of choices. Since the hike is not a loop trail, you'll need to arrange transport by car for one of the ways between Østerbø and Vassbygdi. 

  • The first option is to leave your car at Østerbø. We offer free parking, even if you have already checked out. After completing the hike from Østerbø to Vassbygdi, you can take the bus back to Østerbø. Please be aware that some bus options may require advance booking.

  • For a more flexible approach, you can drive your car down to Vassbygdi in the morning, take the bus back to Østerbø, and then your car will be waiting for you at the end of the hike. This way, you won't be tied to a specific bus schedule after finishing the hike.

  • Another option is to take the bus down to Vassbygdi in the morning and then hike back up to Østerbø.

There are two different parking spots in Vassbygdi, but we recommend the one at Vassbygdi servicebygg since this is where the trail concludes. Here, you can also treat yourself to a cup of coffee, a waffle, or an ice cream after finishing the hike (during the peak season).

Road Work in the Vassbygdi Tunnel

Road work is taking place in the Vassbygdi Tunnel, and the road will be closed daily from 18:00 to 06:00 from March 10, 2025, to July 4, 2025.

Open for through traffic from the Aurland side at 19:00, 20:00, 21:45, and 23:00. A convoy will return from the Vassbygdi side immediately after each opening.

During even-numbered weeks, the road is open for free passage from Friday at 18:00 until Sunday at 18:00.

Guests coming from Ål/Hol are not affected.

Road work is expected to continue into autumn and winter, so we kindly ask our guests to stay updated and plan their trip accordingly.

Bus Options

Østerbø Fjellstove Minibus – for overnight guests only

All our overnight guests can book a seat on our minibus during periods when no other bus services are available. Transportation can be booked between Geiteryggen, Steinbergdalen, Østerbø, and Vassbygdi.

Route Bus 850
This route operates from June 21st through August, plus two weekends in September.
Note: A 10-minute schedule change in the afternoon!

  • Departure daily from Vassbygdi to Østerbø: 08:45 and 17:20 (not 17:30!)

  • Departure from Østerbø to Vassbygdi/Flåm: 13:30 and 18:30 (not 18:40!)

  • Price: NOK 49 per person

Norway's Best Bus
Runs between Flåm and Østerbø Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays in June and September, daily in July and August, and the first two weeks of October.
Note: Advance booking is required to guarantee a seat!

  • Departure from Vassbygdi to Østerbø: 09:00 and 16:00

  • Departure from Østerbø to Vassbygdi: 09:35 and 16:30

  • Price: Adults NOK 250, Children NOK 125

Flåm Travel – Additional Route
From June 21, 2025, Flåm Travel operates an extra route from Vassbygdi to Aurland and Flåm. These times correspond with train departures from Flåm to Oslo and Bergen.

  • From Vassbygdi: 15:40 and 16:55

  • From Aurland: 15:55 and 17:10

  • Arrival in Flåm: 16:10 and 17:25

Connects with trains from Flåm to Myrdal at 16:15 and 17:30.
